Job opening: Campaigner

Better Renting is recruiting a second Campaigner to work on the 'Healthy Homes for Renters' project.

Better Renting is coordinating a national collaboration of over 100 organisations pushing for minimum energy efficiency standards for rental properties. Our ambition with this work is expanding, and we are seeking someone to join our current campaigner to help drive forward new projects. It would be great if this person could also help boost our communications capacity, particularly for online.

Key projects in the coming six months will be:

  • Working with NSW partners to build our power in that state, particularly with a view to the upcoming state election,
  • Helping to organise a Strategy Workshop in mid 2023, held in Sydney,
  • Increasing our engagement with supportive landlords to demonstrate their support of minimum rental standards.

But renters are denied the rights and protections of homeowners. We can't all own a house — but we should all be able to rent a home. About the role

  • Classification: Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award. Social and community services employee 3.4 to 4.4, depending on experience. Annual salary of $71,371 to $82,608, pro-rata. Hourly pay rate of $36.5 to $42.25 per hour. This award includes leave loading of 17.5%.
  • Primary location: We prefer applicants who can work on the ground in Sydney to facilitate local outreach and stakeholder engagement. However, our existing team is spread across Canberra and Adelaide: we encourage all to apply and we are comfortable with remote working arrangements.
  • Time commitment: Part-time, 0.8 FTE (30 hours). We can be flexible week-to-week about what this workload looks like, and can consider a lower FTE for the right applicant.
  • Position length: Fourteen month fixed-term contract.

The role will involve

Here’s what your role might look like week-to-week:

  • Liaising with existing supporters. You conduct a series of one-to-one meetings with NSW partners to help develop a strategy proposal, then convene and run a group meeting to finesse it further and seek agreement and buy-in.
  • Recruiting new supporters. You identify new organisations from NSW that could help to strengthen the collaboration. You find someone to give you an introduction, and you arrange a meeting to discuss joining the collaboration.
  • NSW election engagement. You work with partners to plan a candidates' forum on rental issues, and you develop a promotion strategy. You reach out to candidates from various parties to seek their views as part of developing an election scorecard. You recruit some renters from the community who are happy to meet with their local candidate.
  • Supporting the HH4R collaboration. Beyond NSW or project-specific work, there is a whole collaboration and ongoing campaign. You’ll work on regular meetings of the campaign executive committee and group of supporters, email and social media communications with renter supporters, and potentially liaising with local media to help grow awareness.
  • Engaging with renters. You contact a renter in Penrith to chat with them about their experiences of heat over summer. You check with them if they would be comfortable sharing their story with a local journalist, and also connect them with some useful resources for their situation.

Selection criteria

We will be evaluating applicants on whether you are:

  • reflective and invested in ongoing learning. You value reflection on your practice as a way to develop in your role; you freely give and receive feedback as part of a shared commitment to ongoing growth.
  • great at working with others. You can build effective working relationships with different people, from staff in allied organisations to volunteer renters wanting to support the campaign. You can build connections, find opportunities for mutual benefit, and offer a rewarding experience of participation.
  • highly accountable and able to stay on top of things. Better Renting is a small organisation with minimal resources. You will be your own PA. You should be a natural at staying on top of your responsibilities, reporting back, and getting things done. You don’t need to be followed up.
  • a strong strategic thinker. You demonstrate the ability to analyse a campaign situation, identify opportunities, generate ideas, and put them into action

The best candidates will further distinguish themselves by demonstrating:

  • a record of moving others to act. We want someone who can develop buy-in and commitment in others and rally people behind a shared goal - even if it’s as simple as drafting a joint letter together.
  • an aptitude for digital communications. You can integrate email and social media alongside other forms of campaigning to help grow a base and activate supporters behind an issue.
