ABOUT BETTER RENTING
Better Renting is an independent not-for-profit organisation focused on rental rights issues in Australia. We are building a community of renters working together for stable, affordable, and healthy homes.
As a non-partisan community organisation, we use three approaches to achieve our mission:
- Campaigning for rental laws that provide healthy homes;
- Growing communities of renters who are empowered to defend and extend their rights; and
- Changing the narrative, so that our culture values and promotes renting.
Board Chair (Voluntary)
ABOUT THE ROLE
Our Board plays a crucial governance role for the organisation and is currently expanding to comprise up to eight volunteer non-Executive Directors and one Executive Director. We are currently seeking to recruit a Chair for our Board.
As the Chair of the Board, you will be expected to lead the Board in providing the strategic direction and oversight of Better Renting. More information is in the position description.
We’d like to hear from people who:
- Want to lead an innovative social justice organisation
- Share our bold and radical vision of rental justice
- Have experience in organisational governance and strategy
- Have supportive and collaborative mindset
- Have a background in one of the following:
- Financial management
- Fundraising
- Non-for-profit governance
- Organisational management/leadership
Desirable competencies:
- Experience in organisational leadership
- Experience in the housing or community sector
- Past experience on a board or management committee
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people of colour, people with disability & LGBTIQ+ people are strongly encouraged to apply.

COMMITMENT REQUIRED
Better Renting Directors serve a two-year term with eligibility for reappointment.
The Board currently meets bi-monthly by video conference for around two hours, and face to face approximately once a year on a weekend. Travel is provided. Outside of Board meeting participation, it is expected that the Chair will need to commit the equivalent of around two days per month. The number of hours will fluctuate depending on Board priorities.
There is no requirement to be located in any specific location as Better Renting is a national organisation with Directors from across the country.
