Elaine, 83, has been a renter for most of her life. She's experienced her fair share of run-down homes and dodgy landlords. She now lives in Macquarie, in Belconnen. 

Elaine's previous home was in a retirement village. As a pensioner, Elaine couldn't afford to keep the apartment warm enough in winter. She "absolutely froze". She got pneumonia twice, resulting in a partially collapsed lung.

As a renter, Elaine has always juggled the cost of energy bills with impacts on her health. But she's not prepared to risk her health anymore.

I visited Elaine at home and helped her put bubble wrap on her bedroom windows and stop the draughts coming from her bathroom window. These small changes will make a big difference. Elaine's home is now easier to heat and healthier to live in.
